Sunday, March 9

This is a day late - but no internet access last night...

So started out from Sallisaw, OK a little late after checking out the land that my grandpa owned and visiting my grandma's gravesite. Here's Rudy having fun with some cows - he thought they were great!

Also before leaving Sallisaw, I decided to stop into the Cherokee casino there...where it took me all of 10 minutes to "donate" $12 to them.

Pretty much just stayed on 40 to Oklahoma City, where we stopped by the memorial of the bombing there.

After Oklahoma City, I decided to put the Route 66 maps that I bought off Amazon to good use and track down the "Mother Road". I was able to find it, and we followed it all the way to Texas - which is not an easy thing to do anymore! It took at least twice as long as taking the highway would have, but it was well worth it to see all of the history. Stopping by this old drive-in was neat - its for sale and abandoned, so I made the Jeep earn its keep and drive over the curb and around in the brush to check it out.

After all of that, I needed to hop back on 40 and make up some time if I was going to make it through Texas and to New Mexico that evening - it was already getting dark by the time I even crossed the Texas border! So I sped through most of Texas, taking a break around 10pm to eat at "The Big Texan" which had been advertising since Arkansas. Google it if you get a chance - their "hook" is that if you can eat a 72oz steak and all of the sides in under an hour, your meal is free. So I ate for free last night...haha, kidding of course.

So after another almost 2 hours of driving (I think I had been on the road over 15 hours by the time I stopped), I made it to Tucamcari, NM. Stopped in at the first cheap motel I saw, and we crashed. The driving wears Rudy out much more than me - he basically straddles the distance between the center console and the back seat the entire day just staring at me and hoping I'll let him sit on my lap. Crazy pup.

Today's Map (as close as I could get to the actual route):

That drive-in looks neat and the picture is great. Have fun on the trip.
